Spamassassin has been acting weird. I restarted the service today and it seemed to be fine, but not sure why it was letting spam through. Weirdness!

I decided to force webmail users to use ssl encryption. So what I wanted to do was to make anyonw who tried to go to http://www.dmpnet.org/squirrelmail/ go to https://www.dmpnet.org/squirrelmail/ I also wanted to set up an alias which would be easier for someone to remember and spell called http://www.dmpnet.org/webmail To do this, I needed to get rewrite rules to work on apache. While doing this, I broke the web interface to http://www.dmpnet.org/mailman/listinfo It took me ages to fix mailman and after a lot of pain, I eventually achieved what I was originally after for forcing users to use encryption for webmail.

It was a lot of pain, but I learned a lot about mailman and apache. I am really fed up now, so I think setting up ssl for ftp is going to be at least a few days before I even think about it!!!

Ho hum they say! I also decided to go ahead and install squirrelmail, which makes it very easy to clear spam mail off of the server (rather than download it). It is also nice for the occasional remote access should you need it.

I have always wanted to set up my own listserver. I have used Majordomo over the years and most recently with our hosting service at the-palmers.org, we have used Mailman. I had started to set it up on a couple of occasions, but hit a few problems and stopped.

However, this morning, I took a couple of hours and got it going! You can see the list page here. I know this is not earth shattering, but I learned a fair bit about Mailman, running CGI on Apache and also Postfix. You can join the test list if you wish. I’ll probably play with it from time to time and you might find it interesting.
